DIY Hi-low Dress

Hi-low dresses have been the trend for a while now, and it has definitely caught on with the masses. AKA most of them are pretty expensive. But you don't have to give up going out to eat for a month to afford one.... make your own. I spent about 30 minutes in a second hand store today, picked up some maxi dresses, and did work with some fabric scissors when I got home. 

The dresses were all less than $10. 

You will not find a Hi-low dress online or in-store for 

less than $10. 

You just won't.

Step One
When you buy the dresses at a second hand store, focus on the fabric/pattern. If it's a timeless solid black, polka dot, or solid color, then it will most likely look like you bought it from a department store after you've re-made it. As opposed to if you buy a dated, or blatantly 80s pattern, then it will just look "vintage." Meh.

Step Two
Try on the dress and use a washable pen to mark how short you're going to cut it. Take the dress off and cut one side at a time, trying to make the sides as even as possible. If you're crafty-mc-shmafty, then hem the edges. I probably won't. Let's just say I didn't make the highest grade in clothing construction. #ADMlife #droppedthatmajor

There are two ways you can cut the dress. 

• By cutting straight up the side hems, and a straight line across  your legs, like this dress. 

•

Lately I've been really drawn to floral headwear. I'm just really getting into the spirit of spring I guess????? With that said, happy Easter Sunday! (and April fools day, but I can't really wish you a proper April fool's day without first pranking you...)

I've been so inspired to make one of these, I finally just had to do it yesterday.

My next flower hair piece will definitely be more on the dainty side. I might be more likely to wear it in public if it looks something like the last picture. But don't get me wrong---Easter weekend WILL be graced with my daisy hair piece!!!!!

Pinterest Intervention: Day 6

Today marks the day before my week-iversary of my not using Pinterest. What is it like you ask? Well I definitely channeled some of that pinning energy into DIY projects.

It's amazing what one can do with gold paint, hot glue, and will power. I undoubtedly sacrificed half of the skin on my left thumb, but I feel it was worth it to make that gold chain bracelet. The 3 DIY rings in the top pictures were completely transformed. In my excited-hot-glue-haste, I didn't take before pics of the them: huge mistake. The ring on the right is one of those bulky plastic rings that were in style circa 2009. Then I hot-glued some sort of circular bolt to it and painted the whole thing gold. The Chanel inspired ring is a collaboration of a fake Chanel tranny earring glued to a F21 ring that broke 2 years ago (why do I keep broken jewelry??? #hoarder). 


Yes, you are understanding all of this correctly, I spent my Fat Tuesday night painting silver rings gold on my resume. Yes, that piece of paper is my resume. You can see a "before" ring on my thumb in the nail polish pic. That ring actually came in a set of 3 from a brand called NOIR. If you learn anything today reading this blog, let it be this: DON'T BUY EXPENSIVE JEWELRY UNLESS IT'S WRITTEN IN BLOOD THAT IT WON'T TURN YOUR PHALANGES GREEN. Seriously, I bought those EXPENSIVE ass rings, and they all turned my fingers green, AND EVEN CAUSED AN IRRITATED RASH. Never again. F21 has jewelry that can do that for a tenth of the price, and it's just as sassy. Then again maybe I just have delicate, sensitive, princess-and-the-pea skin, that shall only be graced by the finer handcrafted work of Kors & Yurman. maybe.


My final thoughts on banning myself from Pinterest? 

• Lana Del Rey on Pandora is amaze
• I will pin until my eyes bleed tomorrow
• Not giving up Pinterest for Lent
• Pinterest is male dominated in the UK (learned this in class, it's legit fact)
• I can't wait to pin the CRAP out of the Love, Maegan blog

• Will continue to DIY rings, turbans and purses if I am capable of pulling myself away from Pinterest in the future.

DIY Turban & Clutch

I don't know what's gotten into me. One minute I'm cleaning out my drawers/desk, the next minute I'm painting a vintage (icky yellow) clutch gold. Some call it a surge of creativity that must be quenched when one is feeling inspired. What it really is, is ADD. Plain and Simple.

I bought the oversized yellow clutch at a vintage store in Portales, New Mexico. Love the idea of an oversized clutch--hate the color. I wasn't sure if literally painting it would work, but it did! Then I went through my little crafts slash trinkets box and hot glued pendents to the clutch. Expect to see this lil baby in a future outfit post!

And then we have this turban. I whipped it up while the water heated for my pasta. It's literally that fast to make. It's also semi ghetto. It is safety pinned in a few places, but with a few minor adjustments and will power, that can be hidden. Oh, and the actual turban? Socks from the Dollar Tree. Super classy. But they aren't like cottony-Michael-Jordan-fruit of the loom socks. They are "trouser" socks and are soft and spandex-y. If that makes it sound any better. Then I just hot glued some ivory stones on the ivory turban and VOILA!!! Not as sassy as the Luv AJ turbans but still... don't be surprised if it crops up in an outfit post.

This Week's Obsession: Love Meagan

I found this new blog I'm obsessed with and secretly dying on the inside because I'm not able to pin the crap out of it (refer to previous posts). It's called "Love Meagan" and this woman is in her 30s, married, and lives in LA, and has parlayed herself into a full-time blogger (ummm my life dream?????). Her DIY's are pretty much the best I've seen. She also has ridiculous outfit posts, and inspo for house decor. Get addicted!!!

Faux Fo' Sho'

A while back, I wrote about a video tutorial from PS: I made this on how to make your own faux fur vest. I actually made mine a while back, and am finally getting around to blogging about it! I originally had step by step photos, but I've gotten a new iPhone since then. Darn it. Anyways, hope this helps! Just in time for the holidays!

Like I said, I followed the PS: I made this video, but I'm going to tweak the instructions, based on my experience with it.

Things to take note of...

• Try to buy faux fur that is a little longer. When the fur is too short, it looks cheap.
• Either cut the fabric over a blanket/tarp or outside OR get ready to vacuum the crap out of your apartment. Fur galore.
• Buy two different furs, make one long and one short. It's so affordable, you might as well!
• This particular tutorial creates a vest that is cut roundly, and has a drape effect in the front. If you would rather have a square-cut vest, then modify step 2. 

Materials

• 1 yard fur (for one vest)
• Fabric scissors
• Marker (light color
• Measuring tape
• Paper

Steps

1. Lay the fabric down on a surface, with the fur direction going down, fur-side to the surface
2. Using the marker, trace a large oval reaching the edges of the fabric, depending on how long you want the vest.
3. Cut out the oval shape.
4. With your measuring tape, measure the distance between your armpits, over your collar bone.
5. Eyeing the center of the fabric, mark the distance between your armpits. (I know it seems unnatural to mark this distance in the center of the fabric, but it works)
6. Draw an almond shape on your  piece of paper, large enough for your arm hole to fit.
7. Lay the almond shape vertically on one of the armpit marks (Make sure that there is at least 8-10 inches of fabric under the bottom of the almond shape. If not, then move the almond shape higher on the fabric until there is)
8. Trace the almond shape and cut it out.
9. Repeat on the other armpit mark
10. Try on the vest, and tweak it to your liking. I cut belt holes in mine :> I also ended up cutting a little more off the top and sides to make it a little less bulky. 

Disclaimers
I've had a few smart a$$ boys tell me, "What's that made out of? Racoons?" to which I reply, "NO, YOUR MOMS CHEST HAIR." Sometimes, to sport a trend, you have to sport a mean streak. Plus, mean girls quotes never get old.

Hope this little diddy helps you guys out. Not really though, because I don't want yours to be cuter than mine.

Decorating your room with classy perfume? Why not?????? I put Vera Wang perfume by a photo of my sister's wedding. I also made that picture frame.... Just hot glue ten zillion colored pearls to a frame. Voila!

I'm all fur DIY projects

I've really been wanting a fur vest lately. I feel like this was a big trend last fall and should probably be "out" by now, but I also feel like as long as Rachel Zoe is alive, then they are in style. Ok so the ones I really wanted were all super expensive (AKA not $20) so then I thought, it can't be that hard to make, right? I did a little more googling and found an easy tutorial.

This was the most affordable one I found. Revolveclothing, just $57.

But I also love this Michael Kors vest for 175...

But then I found this one!!!!

But like I said, I'm not about to spend that much for a fur vest. So I came upon this tutorial video...

And I'm so serious about doing this! How easy is that?!?
